i am using DFN for trading, so when i check "Time and Sales" on a certain stock there is a column called "Side" on that column they defined whether it is a “Buy” or a “Sell” order. Question Rolling Eyes

however as i know every "Sell" order is a "Buy" order, every "Buy" order is a "Sell" order(correct me if i am wrong). so how do they define whether it is a “Buy” or a “Sell” order? Rolling Eyes Question

May be it's like this.
Say there is Counter "X" and orders like following
Buy - 100 @ 10.00 and Sell 100 @ 10.20
If seller reduce his price and Sell at 10.00 it's sell If Buyer increase his price and Buy at 10.20 It's a Buy
I'm not sure about that just a thought.

If someone puts an order initially categorized as a SELL order and some one place a buy order to purchase it, it is a BUY.

If some one puts an order initially categorized as a BUY order and some one sell to it, it is a SELL order.

It is based on the initial transaction (order) category, either BUY or SELL.

Agree with Stev.
"Buy", "Sell" and the "quantity" is clearly denoted by the "cash map" which indicates from which side the pressure (buy/sell) is exerted.
